Sarah Hargrave

You've been at Clyde & Co for eight years - can you describe the culture?

I expected it to be challenging and hard work, which it is, but it is also very friendly and open. The only surprising aspect is that although I work in a team of people who are at the top of their field, there are no egos and we have a great working relationship. I think it is this lack of ego which is fundamental to the ethos of the firm.

What's the most challenging aspect of your job? And the most rewarding?

Applying insurance law to the problem at hand is the most challenging. Unfortunately, unlike answers to university exam questions, the problems or cases we are given do not always have clearly defined solutions - we can find ourselves in position where we are making new law! The most rewarding aspect is achieving a good result for the clients, whether that is through negotiation, mediation or litigation.

It's a demanding profession - can you still manage to achieve a good work/life balance?

I returned to work after having my first baby six months ago and I now work four days a week. Although it is difficult to juggle the demands of the job and my home life, I do get support. I can work from home as well as the office, which makes things easier. There are times when something is needed at short notice so flexibility is the answer.

Would you recommend Clyde & Co as a firm at which to begin a legal career?

Absolutely. The firm is first rate, the training is excellent and the people make the place what it is. I trained at Clyde & Co and have continued to learn and develop throughout the last six years since qualifying. It is demanding, but also fun and rewarding. It's a great place to build a career and I wholly recommend it.
