Rachael de los Reyes
What made you choose a career in law?
I was drawn to law because it's a field in which you can continue to learn throughout your career - legislation and case law are always evolving and you have to evolve with it. I also saw it as a career in which I could use skills I'd developed in my academic life up to that point, such as detailed research, drafting documents, working in teams and analysing problems to find practical solutions.
Any surprises during your training contract?
I didn't fully appreciate the extent to which the firm itself operates as a business in a competitive market. Even as a trainee, you are encouraged to develop an entrepreneurial approach and to seek out opportunities to bring in new business.
Can you describe the culture at Clyde & Co?
One of the reasons I applied to Clyde & Co is because it has a reputation for being a very friendly firm and I'm very happy to say that this is actually true! It's not a hierarchical environment and the people at all levels are very approachable.
What did you gain from your training contract?
I've really enjoyed it and learnt a huge amount. The sectors in which Clyde & Co works are wide-ranging, which exposes you to a broad variety of contentious and transactional projects.
You quickly become involved in all aspects of the work and are given plenty of opportunities to show your capabilities. In fact, you'll get as much responsibility as you can handle - I was meeting and liaising with clients within the first few weeks of joining Clyde & Co.
