Michael Hennessy

What made you decide to become a lawyer?

I wanted to have a career that would be fast-paced, challenging and stimulating. I also wanted to have the opportunity to work on international deals with people from different cultures.

Have you been surprised by particular aspects of your career as a legal professional?

I have been surprised at the amount of responsibility you can be given from a very early stage in your career. From the start, you can play a pivotal role in important multinational transactions.

Looking back to when you started, is there any advice you would give yourself now?

Be organised and consistent.

What is the most interesting thing about working for Clyde & Co in the Middle East?

It is both interesting and occasionally frustrating that many areas of the legal market in the Middle East are still in their infancy. You can see the law developing around you and there is room for legal analysis in areas of the law that have been well ironed out in more sophisticated jurisdictions.

Can you describe the position/reputation of Clyde & Co in your region?

Clyde & Co is the largest law firm in the Middle East and certainly one of the most highly regarded.

What attributes/skills would you expect to see in a trainee solicitor and specifically a Clyde & Co lawyer?

Adaptable - you need to be able to get on with different personalities, cultures and working styles; Organised - that means having the ability to handle a wide variety of matters and keep track of their progress; Enthusiastic - getting on with the work and having a positive attitude.

What have you personally gained out of training in the Middle East?

It has honestly been a fantastic experience, both personally and professionally. The opportunity to work in Dubai in a booming market has been exhilarating. I have also travelled around the region and gained insight into one of the most fascinating and sometimes paradoxical parts of the world.

What career goals do you hope to achieve in the next few years?

When I finish my training, I would like to qualify into an area of the law I feel passionate about. Hopefully the rest, Inshallah, will all go well.

Would you recommend training with Clyde & Co in the Middle East?

Clyde & Co is a pioneer and leader in the legal market in the Middle East. At the same time, the firm is small enough for an enthusiastic trainee to make their mark. I would recommend this experience to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons, receive top-notch training and gain hands-on experience.
