What is the most interesting thing about working for Clyde & Co in Hong Kong?
You get more early responsibility than with most other firms, including business development, and this gives you more of an overview of the running of a successful law firm. You also have the opportunity to represent the firm at overseas conferences.
Have you been surprised by particular aspects of your career as a legal professional?
Only that increasingly, the advice you give your clients is more about running their business effectively and putting in place mechanisms to avoid law suits being instituted.
Looking back to when you started, is there any advice you would give yourself now?
I have been quite lucky and have chosen areas of practice that I am interested in, which has given me a wide variety of cases to handle. I spend quite a lot of time interacting with clients and the hours I work are reasonable.
Can you describe the position/reputation of Clyde & Co in your region?
We have a solid reputation in our core areas of shipping, aviation, international trade, insurance and commercial litigation. We are also recognised as a firm to be reckoned with in respect of our newer areas of practice.
What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding would be settling litigation matters on terms advantageous to the client or winning court applications. For non-litigious matters, the reward comes in knowing that you have made a difference to the client.
What attributes and skills would you expect to see in a Clyde & Co lawyer?
Common sense goes a long way, as does having commercial awareness of the international markets. Clyde & Co lawyers generally go that extra distance in understanding their clients' businesses and industries, so that they can give advice that is not only technically sound, but also practical.
