What made you decide to become a lawyer?

First and foremost, I wanted to begin a career where I could gain a first-class professional qualification that would stand me in good stead for the future.

I also was attracted by the way that the law provides you with a real intellectual challenge within a fast-paced commercial context - I quickly learned that you need to use your skills and knowledge to make a difference in real business situations rather than just textbook scenarios. I chose Clyde & Co as they offered first-class training and the opportunity to be an integral part of the team right from the start.

I also wanted to make use of my Russian language skills - and as Clyde & Co has an office in Moscow and an associated office in St Petersburg, I knew this was a real possibility.

Any surprises since joining Clyde & Co?

I don't think anything could have adequately prepared me for the sheer diversity of legal practice - it plays a part in almost every aspect of the commercial world.

I completed four seats during my training contract in shipping, banking, re-insurance, and trade and energy. The training and support was very good in preparing you to work in these areas. Looking back it was surprising how little I knew and how much I learned by assisting on complex projects in areas that would have been a mystery to me previously.

What advice would you give to those starting out?

I think it's important to have some idea of where you might want your legal career to take you from the outset. Of course, you'll be trying different things which may lead you down new avenues, but you have to have some strong areas of interest and particular ambitions. There are always opportunities to start gaining experience and developing your career towards these right from the beginning.
