Placements: Middle East

Our placement schemes provide a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in a top legal firm and to find out more about Clyde & Co first hand.

You'll get to know us better, and we'll also get to know you - it's a great way of making a strong impression on us if you are thinking about applying for a training contract at Clyde & Co.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh

Our Middle East Regional Offices (MERO) offer two summer placement schemes, each a fortnight long, aimed at penultimate-year law students and final-year students of other disciplines. The summer placement schemes are also open to candidates who are currently studying for the GDL or LPC, or who are considering a career change.

It provides an opportunity for candidates to spend two weeks at Clyde & Co, meet lawyers at every level, experience the very real differences between academic study and legal practice, and undertake a variety of work. In addition, candidates will see first hand how law is applied and practiced in the Middle East.

The dates for the Clyde & Co MERO Summer Placement schemes in 2011 are:

  • 17 - 28 June 2012; and
  • 1 - 12 July 2012

Real experience

During the two weeks, you'll have the opportunity to assist lawyers in different practice areas, each handling a range of work types. You'll gain experience of commercial law in practice. For example, you could get involved in any of the following:

  • negotiating transactions and drafting documents
  • attending trials, arbitrations and meetings
  • liaising with clients

The areas of work you may be exposed to could range from analysing witness statements about a shipping incident to assisting on a high-value corporate transaction – a variety of opportunities that will give you a real of taste of working life at Clyde & Co in the Middle East.

Training

Clyde & Co has a wide range of education and training programme for its lawyers. Our Learning & Development team work closely with the Trainee Solicitor Recruitment team to design a programme especially for summer placement candidates, which includes:

  • talks on the areas of the firm's work and our presence in the region
  • role – playing and case study exercises
  • guidance on your next career steps after work placements

Skills practice

As part of the programme, you'll have the chance to use many of the skills essential to the role of a solicitor at Clyde & Co. You'll gain experience of:

  • negotiating
  • dealing with clients
  • interviewing
  • teamwork
  • research
  • presenting

Social scene

The summer placement scheme is designed to be busy, challenging and rewarding – but it's not all about work! You'll have plenty of opportunity to meet our trainees and other staff in a social context.
